Meditation is the Key

I think I first learned about meditation when The Beatles began meditating in India.  I thought that only special people could do it and you had to have a guru to help you.

I also read in one of Betty Shine's books that meditating was good for you and could help you develop your psychic powers.

At the time, I really did know very little about the subject but I thought I would give it a try.

Well at first I would sit and begin to itch and then want to scratch and then I would feel all fidgety and uncomfortable.  Then thoughts of dinner and shopping and holidays would run through my head.  I found it very difficult to begin with.

I would sit for short periods.  Maybe five minutes at the most as I just felt so itchy and fidgeting whenever I tried to meditate.

However, the more I practiced then the more I got used to it.  The itching slowly subsided.  I do believe that this was my body's response to me actually relaxing.  Not something that I was used to doing. I was always on the go.  The fidgeting also  began to subside and the thoughts slowly stopped rushing through my head.

I was not sure if I was doing it right or not.  I was unable to sit cross-legged as my hips just will not allow me to do this and so I would sometimes lie down on the floor or mostly I would sit in a chair.  Sometimes I would fall asleep but that does not really matter when you are meditating. Sometimes you can still remember what happens during your meditation even if you do happen to fall asleep.

The best thing, for me though, was to sit on a kitchen type of chair with my bare feet flat on the floor and my hands held gently in my lap.  I found this the most comfortable position to have and it helped me not to fall asleep.

I would try meditating with or without music.  I also tried listening to bird song, nature sounds or the sound of the sea as well as different types of gentle music.  All these ways were fine with me.

It not matter either, what type of cd I listened to as to what I experienced during my meditations. For example, listening to the sounds of the sea did not result in a meditation about the sea.

I would keep a note book by my side and write down anything that I experienced during my meditation.  I would also keep a glass of water by my side.  The glass of water helps you to disconnect at the end of the meditation.  You can also drink some tea and have a biscuit or something small to eat, if you like, as this too will help you to ground yourself at the end of your meditation.

Since my first little struggles I have found that meditation is not hard at all.  It is very easy.  You can do it in many ways and you can do it for as short or as long as you want.  One minute or twenty minutes will be fine.  it is all up to you.

Sit outside and look up at the stars and use this as a kind of meditation period.  Or you can 'moon bathe'.

Meditate to the sound of rain.  I love the sound of rain. Why not sit in your car or maybe you have a tent or caravan and can sit and listen to the sound of the rain.  Knowing that you are snug and warm while the rain pours down outside can be very comforting.  Meditation does not mean you have to sit for hours, cross legged on a hard floor.  Try getting out into the countryside and meditating to the rain or the stars or 'just be' for a while and let your everyday thoughts go.

Meditate by water.

Just do it!  Try one minute at first and then build up slowly and gradually to about twenty minutes or so.
